First, we were interested in the heated topic of gun rights. We thought of the recent and most tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado. This got us thinking about public shootings and their effect on the government and the citizens of America. Since we are high school students, we decided The Columbine Shooting would be the perfect topic for us to divulge in.
When we started research, we gained basic knowledge from books on gun rights and The Columbine Shooting. From there we got guidance from our history teacher, Jessica Shoemaker. We then narrowed in on our details and analyzed books and newspaper articles, which we found on the internet. The next place we looked for research was the National Archives and there we found valuable information on our topic. A few weeks later, we met Kevin Parker, a survivor of the shooting, and heard him talk about his views on gun rights and what exactly happened that day.
When deciding our project, we considered our skills with computers and our past experiences building websites and we decided that this project would be a perfect fit with our skillset. Using Weebly, a site builder, we were able to set up the structure of our site and from there we could add multimedia and build our thoughts into the website by meeting up multiple times and on our own free time.
The theme of “Rights and Responsibilities” relates to our topic of The Columbine Shooting perfectly. The Second Amendment states that every citizen of America has the right to bear arms, but this comes with a responsibility to obey America’s laws. You are only allowed to use guns in self-defense or for a recreational use.
